What is 6th Schedule?
Ladakh Protest: In Indian constitution there is an article 244 which has 6th Schedule to safeguard the mountains and by giving indigenous people right to make the laws about they want to develop these regions and how much they want to develop.
Qualification for 6th Schedule?
After the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution was revoked by the Parliament on August 5, 2019, Ladakh was turned into a Union Territory without any legislative assembly.
The BJP promised and mentioned in Manifestos in 2019 election that they will provide status of Ladakh to be of Union Territory and it will be brought under 6th schedule of the constitution as other states like Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram.
The minimum qualification required for any state or UT to get the 6th schedule is 50% of the total population as tribal, while Ladakh has 97% of its total population as tribal.
The party also declared Manifestos for LAHDC Election 2020,to constitutionally safeguard for Ladakh under 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution as discussed by Apex body with Home Ministry to protect the land job, environment focusing the Ladakh’s unique linguistic and ethnic culture.

Sonam Wangchuk Climate Fast.
Sonam Wangchuk’s protest began on 6 March when hundreds of people gathered in sub-zero temperatures at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level. He alleges that they are losing prime pasture land to huge industrial plants to the south & Chinese encroachment to the north.
School and university students, civil bodies, local farmers, an environmental group called ‘Friends of Ladakh and Friends of Nature’ are among the people who’ve shown solidarity with Wangchuk’s protest so far.
Sonam has completed his 21 days of climate fast, which was longest fast Gandhi ji kept.
But the journey has just started he said.

Why Ladakh is important to Safeguard?
Ladakh is also called 3rd Pole of the earth after North and South Pole. It is called so because it holds 3rd largest reservoir of fresh water after North and South Pole.
It has more than 50 thousand glaciers which serves water basic necessity to nearly 2 billion people of India.
These areas are very sensitive and thus needs to be protected. As due to climate we can see so many glaciers melting.
Important Points to Safeguard.
1. Not Living sustainably as a result increased carbon emissions.
2. Industrial expansion to meet consumer needs.
3. India has so many articles in our constitution to safeguard sensitive areas, cultures of indigenous people.
