World Water Day, celebrated on March 22 every year ever since 1993.
World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
The theme for 2024 year’s World Water Day campaign is “Water for Peace”.

Water Shortage India:
In India very recently Banglore one of the major cities in India facing water shortage due to weak monsoons and depletion of groundwater resources.They has a min. requirement of 2 billion litres of water per day. Of this, more than 70% is sourced from the river Cauvery. The balance is met from groundwater drawn through bore wells. Due to, a failed monsoon in recent months have the depleted groundwater levels. To overcome this, deeper bore wells are being dug. Still, the city is facing a daily shortfall of 200 million litres of water.
Action Plan :
There needs to be action in plan to further face these water scarcity challenges.

- Save water: Take shorter showers and don’t let the tap run when brushing my teeth, doing dishes
and preparing food. - Eat local: Buy local, seasonal food and look for products made with less water.
- Break taboos: Talk about the critical connection between toilets, water and menstruation.
- Be curious: Find out where my water comes from and how it is shared, and visit a treatment plant
to see how my waste is managed. - Make it equal: Share water-fetching between women and men, girls and boys.
- Protect nature: Plant a tree or create a raingarden – use natural solutions to reduce the risk of
flooding and store water. - Flush safe: Fix leaking water and waste pipes, empty full septic tanks and report dumping of sludge.
- Build pressure: Write to my elected representatives about budgets for improving water at home and
abroad. - Stop polluting: Don’t put food waste, oils, medicines and chemicals down my toilet or drains.
- Clean up: Take part in clean-ups of my local rivers, lakes, wetlands or beaches.
